Options of Treatment for the Mesotelioma - Surgery
Two main types of quirúrguica treatment for mesotelioma exist pleural: the extra-pleural neumonectomía (EPP) and pleurectomía/decortication.
The Epp involves the extirpation of the pleura, the diaphragm, the pericardium and all the lung jeopardizes by the tumor. The pleurectomía/decortication consists of the extirpation of the pleura, but not the whole lung.
The election of the treatment depends on many things, including the development of the tumor. (The National Institute of the Cancer has a description of the different stages from mesotelioma in:
- National institute of Cancer - for patients
- National institute of Cancer - for professionals of the health
However, it is not clear if the EPP provides benefits significantly majors that pleurectomía/decortication, or if anyone of these two treatments is superior to the nonsurgical options.
With surgery the tumor can be extirpated most of and this treatment is often used in combination with other treatments (multi modal), but the application of the surgery is limited when the tumor is near the vital organs, the surgery also can provide symptomatic lightening.
As much the EPP as the pleurectomía/decortication is complicated surgeries and they are not realized frequently by the majority of the curujanos. The patients sister referred to dedicated centers these treatments. Many of these centers also specialize in other treatments for mesotelioma, single or in combination (modal therapy multi).
